The best way to teach students about intonation is to provide them with opportunities to feel, play, and hear what good intonation sounds like. Forcing them to play chords and lines that are perfectly in-tune will develop their ears and "intonation reflexes" much quicker than other methods. Students in Middle and High School have far better ears than we sometimes think, and if trained properly, can adapt, match, and tune themselves without needing to be prompted. Individual and ensemble intonation are the students' responsibilities, so make them responsible!

These four arrangements, set in four common keys for Concert Band and comfortable ranges for all instruments, provide students with the opportunity to play balanced, tuned chords at whatever pace is most appropriate for the ensemble. While these studies are not an instant fix for ensemble intonation problems, consistent time spent on them will pay dividends down the road.

I developed these arrangements while teaching High School Band in Southern Pennsylvania, utilized them daily with both of my concert ensembles as part of our warm-up routine, and was absolutely amazed at the transformation. The students' ears developed quickly, and suddenly playing out of tune was just as wrong as playing an incorrect note.  By exposing them to great intonation by means of actively creating it themselves, they created first-hand experiences of what "truly in-tune" sounded like, and therefore were able to diagnose and correct problems on the fly.
